Batumi, the second-largest city of south-west Georgia, is located in a subtropical zone near the foot of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains on the coast of the Black Sea.

Batumi was developed in the late 19th Century as the western terminus of a railway from Baku that then carried one-fifth of the world’s oil production. After the communist period, Batumi was redeveloped to encourage tourism, around which much of Batumi's economy now revolves. Industries such as shipbuilding, food processing and light engineering form its commercial backbone.
